In 2023 Bjarke Ingles Group – BIG, opened up a 7-storey HQ located in Copenhagen’s harbour Nordhavn – a place known for its heritage of warehouses and factories. BIG chose a Kvadrat Acoustics solution to enhance their workspaces and meeting rooms.
When entering the headquarters, the inner life of the building reveals itself through diagonal views to the top floor. A single stone column of six different types of rock – ranging from dense granite at the bottom to solid marble at the top – carries the structure at the heart of the space. Each floor provides direct access to a balcony connected to the balcony above and below, forming a continuous ribbon of outdoor spaces. The building integrates solar and geothermal systems and is also designed with the use of FutureCem concrete, which reduces CO2 emission with approx. 25% reduction.
The Kvadrat Acoustics solution was integrated to meet the acoustic challenge provided by the hard elements that characterise the interior, like large windows, stone, raw aluminium, and hot rolled steel. At its core, it is a workspace where Kvadrat Acoustics’ solutions help shape a productive and comfortable meeting room environment for everyone working there, meanwhile also harmonises with the material palette chosen by BIG.
“The combination of large panel sizes with very fine tolerances and the delicate surface of the textile means that the ceilings in the meeting rooms have a very clean expression. And yet, at closer inspection, a tactile quality that changes as the sun moves across the sky. Kvadrat Acoustics’ expertise in fabrics, production of panels and installation has been great throughout the process, and we are very pleased with the result.” Frederik Lyng, Partner BIG CPH
The Soft Cells Broadline panels comprise rectangular and trapezoid forms and feature a special metallised textile, which faces into the rooms. Consequently, at the same time as they optimise acoustic quality, the ceilings fill the rooms with a gentle shimmer as the sun reflects off the sea throughout the day.
The specification of the Kvadrat Acoustics’ also made it possible for BIG to integrate a sophisticated sound system in the meeting rooms without compromising on the vision for a simple expression.
