Kvadrat is now opening a beautiful showroom in Chicago that represents another milestone on the ‘Kvadrat Goes American’ journey, which began in 2021. It follows the opening of Kvadrat showrooms in Grand Rapids, New York and Los Angeles. To celebrate the opening, Kvadrat is showing Totems – an installation comprising curious totem figures woven from textiles – by long-term collaborators and acclaimed design duo Doshi Levien.
Kvadrat also presents the textiles:
Naveli by Doshi Levien, Suunta by Studio Truly Truly, and Broken Twill Sheer by Jonathan Olivares.
Naveli by Doshi Levien
Naveli is a pure woollen upholstery textile designed by Doshi Levien with a multidimensional colour expression, inspired by the concept of ‘soft modernism’. In Hindi, Naveli means ‘fresh’, ’new’ and ‘clean’ – a sentiment that describes the pure, crisp composition of the wool textile, and creates a characterful contrast with its gently vibrant colours.
Nipa Doshi: “Soft modernism was our starting point for the colour story. The juxtaposition of modernity with ancient architectural monuments and forts. The paintings of Kazimir Malevich, Josef Albers, Sophie Taeuber-Arp and photographs of Raghubir Singh. Crisp structured tailoring in muted colours. Sun faded architecture in southern summer skies. Matte colours in Indian miniature paintings. Colour as a material. The new optimistic identity of the pioneers of Indian modernism.”
Naveli has a precise micro-check construction and is woven with both thick and thin yarns in different colours. This composition creates playful, delicate deviations in texture and depth. There are two sides to Naveli’s colourways. The textiles woven with an ecru base are understated yet offer a graphic pattern, whereas the others are bolder in colour but with a more subtle pattern. This range suggests opportunities or combining Naveli in its different colours on a single piece of furniture, or across multiple surfaces within the same interior. Naveli is a mono material textile with a reduced environmental impact. It is woven from locally sourced Worsted wool and does not incorporate synthetic fibres. Naveli is well-suited to both public and private spaces.

Suunta by Studio Truly Truly
Suunta is a knitted upholstery that offers colourways and tactile textures inspired by the rows of blooms in Dutch flower fields. It is designed by Studio Truly Truly. The ribbed construction of Suunta – Finnish for ‘direction’m– unites single lines of wool and recycled polyester of different hues in a knitted jacquard stitch. This composition creates a lustrous rhythm of intricate chevrons across the surface of the textile. Suunta also plays with scale and perception. From a distance, its colourful stripes evoke rows of flowers seen from the air. But get closer, and the layers of colour from the different yarns emerge from its rich surface. Furthermore, as the textile seamlessly stretches over volumes, the tone of the knitted ribs hovers around the edges, like a luminescent haze. The colour scale designed by Studio Truly Truly explores the dynamic and inspiring colour combinations that the natural world presents, offering a playful contrast between bright floral hues, leafy neutrals, and earthy tones.
Studio Truly Truly: “We’re fascinated with how colour behaves and the nuanced way that nature offers and deals with colour. A drab bucket makes the flowers it holds even brighter. From a distance, rows of flowers turn into stripes of a colour made of petals and green leaves.”
The use of recycled polyester in Suunta does not detract from its strong durability. It derives its excellent Martindale rating from the technologically advanced way it is produced: each row is knitted with a single needle with the strongest yarns on the exterior. Consequently, it is suitable for high-traffic applications as well as private homes.

Broken Twill Sheer by Jonathan Olivares
Broken Twill Sheer Broken Twill Sheer is a curtain textile designed by Jonathan Olivares. It is a contemporary interpretation of a classic twill weave, which delicately captures a sense of light and movement. It offers an upscaled iteration of the design for his upholstery Broken Twill Weave, with an almost sun-bleached colour scale. The curtain’s pattern, an intricate herringbone motif broken by a fine vertical line, modernises an archetypal architectural construction that initially appeared in ancient Rome. Woven from Trevira CS yarns, a quarter of which are recycled, Broken Twill Sheer is exceptionally soft and folds to eye-catching effect. When the curtain drapes in the light, the pattern dissolves into the folds while emerging on the curved edges, creating three-dimensional volume. Consequently, the curtain reveals surprising new traits throughout the day: it is always in flux. Broken Twill Sheer’s colourways unite two tone-in-tone colours that vary in levels of contrast. Seven are woven with a white warp, and two with a black warp. As a result, some appear almost unicoloured and offer a subtle depth, while others look more graphic. The colourways also exemplify Jonathan Olivares’ acclaimed colour precision and talent for finding new shades. Like Broken Twill Weave, the colours reference elements of his experimental house in Mexico, and of the surrounding landscape: including pinecones, agave plants, maple trees, minerals, flora, and even locally cast bricks. As a result, Broken Twill Sheer acts as a bridge between textiles and architecture.
Jonathan Olivares: “If you look at the colours for Broken Twill Sheer, in a way, they’ve all been diluted with light. While they link to the palette for Broken Twill Weave, they are softer and less saturated. Like all the colours I design, they are representational abstractions: ‘capsules’ of something else tangible in the world.”Broken Twill Sheer is suitable for public and private spaces.
