is the first to comprehensively present her as a filmmaker.
The exhibition is comprised of six artworks and explores a variety of subjects: The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (1981–2022) her magnum opus; The Other Side (1992– 2021) a historical portrait produced as an homage to her trans friends whom she photographed 1972–2010; Sisters, Saints and Sibyls (2004–2022) a testament to the trauma of families and suicide; Fire Leap (2010–2022) a foray into the world of children; Memory Lost (2019–2021) a claustrophobic journey through drug withdrawal; and Sirens (2019–2020)a trip into drug ecstasy.
Installed in six unique buildings, Kvadrat is proud to support the exhibition with 2600 metres of Divina 3 and Divina Melange 3 by Finn Sködt, and Balboa by Sahco, each constituting respectively the interior, exterior and light lock layer of the six buildings.

About Nan Goldin
Nan Goldin (born September 12, 1953) is an American photographer and activist. Her work often explores LGBT subcultures, moments of intimacy, the HIV/AIDS crisis, and the opioid epidemic. Goldin’s most famous work is The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (1981–2022), a slideshow that presents nearly 700 images from her life in New York during the 1970s and ’80s; throughout the reel, the artist lies in bed with her lover, drag queens kiss in bars, and the AIDS epidemic ravages the photographer’s community. Recognized as a pioneer of diaristic photography, Goldin has exhibited at the Louvre, the Museum
of Modern Art, and Tate Modern, among other prestigious institutions. Her work has sold for six figures
at auction.
In 2017, Goldin founded the influential organization P.A.I.N., with the goal to hold the Sackler family responsible for their role in the opioid crisis. Goldin lives and works in New York City, Berlin, and Paris.
About Moderna Museet
Moderna Museet is one of Europe’s leading museums for modern and contemporary art. We collect, preserve, share and exhibit modern art from the early 20th century and photography from 1840 and onwards.
The museum opened in 1958, when was moved from the Nationalmuseum into a former navy drill hall on Skeppsholmen in Stockholm. The current building was completed in 1998, adjoining the old museum premises,
and is designed by the Spanish architect Rafael Moneo. Moderna Museet also opened in Malmö in 2009.
The Moderna Museet art collection comprises more than 130,000 works in various media. Originally dominated by three categories – Swedish and Nordic art, French-oriented modernism, and American art from the 1950s and 60s – the collection has been extended to include ground-breaking 20th and 21st century women artists and works from a globalised world. With some 100,000 items, Moderna Museet’s photography collection is incomparable.
Only a fraction of the collection can be on display. But it allows us to explore and reformulate the standard art historical narrative through new insights and constant changes in the exhibition. This includes Moderna Museet Malmö, with its innovative angle on selecting and showing works from the collection since opening in 2009.
